== .aif と .aiff ==
AIFF fileには主に、

* <code>.aif</code>
* <code>.aiff</code>

の2種類の拡張子が見られる。

両者は文字数が異なるだけで、通常は同じAIFF file formatを表す。

古いfilesystemやsoftwareでは3文字extensionが好まれたため<code>.aif</code>が使われる場合があった。

== ファイル識別 ==
拡張子はfile formatを推測する手掛かりだが、実際のfile typeは内部headerを確認して判断できる。

AIFFはIFF系FORM structureを持ち、通常はFORM typeとしてAIFFを識別できる。

単にextensionを<code>.aif</code>から<code>.aiff</code>へ変更しても、内部audio dataが変換されるわけではない。

== AIFCとの違い ==
<code>.aif</code>と[[Special:MyLanguage/AIFF|AIFF]]は密接に対応するが、AIFF-C / AIFCはcompressed audioを扱える拡張形式であり別file typeとして定義される。
