Translations:Beluga whale/23/en
Underwater visibility may be limited by depth, suspended sediment, seasonal darkness, and ice. Sound travels far more effectively than light through many of these environments. Belugas use sound in two broad ways: communication transmits information between animals, while echolocation is an active sensing system in which a whale interprets echoes from its own clicks. The same animal and sound-producing anatomy support both systems, but a social call is not simply a form of sonar, and an echolocation click should not automatically be interpreted as a message.
