Like other toothed whales, belugas generate most high-frequency sounds in a complex of air sacs and vibrating tissues in the nasal region rather than with mammalian vocal folds. Acoustic energy passes through the melon, which helps form a forward-projecting beam. Returning echoes are received through sound-conducting tissues associated with the lower jaw and transmitted to the ears.[1]
