The timing of calls also matters. In the same study, adults sometimes exchanged Type A calls antiphonally—that is, one animal's call was followed within a short interval by another's. During the first three months of one calf's life, half of its mother's Type A calls occurred within two seconds of a calf call. Temporal association alone does not prove that every sequence is a deliberate exchange, but the context and repeated patterns support a role in maintaining contact.[1]
