Evidence from free-ranging whales strengthens, but does not close, the case for vocal identity cues. During 14 natural entrapments in a shallow channel at Cunningham Inlet, contact calls accounted for 61 percent of vocalizations from temporarily isolated whales, compared with 10 percent in the free-ranging herd. Researchers catalogued 87 complex contact-call types and found that the number of distinctive types increased with the number of entrapped animals. They described this as preliminary evidence for vocal signatures in wild belugas.[1]
