Masking occurs when background sound reduces the detectability of a biologically relevant signal. It does not require physical hearing damage: a healthy animal can fail to detect a call when noise overlaps it in frequency and time. For a social species, the result is a smaller communication space—the area over which a call remains audible to an intended receiver.
