The Cook Inlet repertoire study reached a complementary result. In the 0–12 kHz band, common call types were partly masked by distant commercial ship noise and completely masked by nearby ship noise.[1] Belugas may alter calling behaviour, level, or frequency in noise, but compensation has limits and may carry energetic or informational costs. More intense sound can also disturb behaviour or, at sufficiently high exposure, injure hearing.[2]
