The beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), also called the beluga or white whale, is a toothed whale of Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. It belongs to the family Monodontidae, whose only other living species is the narwhal (Monodon monoceros).[1] The Japanese name shiro-iruka literally means “white dolphin,” but the beluga is not a member of Delphinidae, the taxonomic family usually called the oceanic dolphins.
