In echolocation, a beluga emits a click and interprets the returning echo. Echo delay carries information about range; changes in level and spectrum can contribute information about target size, shape, orientation, motion, and material. The whale can adjust click rate, level, spectrum, and beam direction as it approaches or examines a target. Echolocation supports navigation, obstacle avoidance, and prey detection where vision alone is unreliable.[1]
