The IUCN assessed the beluga globally as Least Concern in 2017, but a global category can conceal severe local declines.[1] Populations are geographically, genetically, and behaviourally differentiated, and threats are not evenly distributed. The Cook Inlet distinct population segment, for example, is listed as endangered under the United States Endangered Species Act; NOAA's current abundance estimate is about 331 animals.[2]
